Severance with kids: neighborhood playgrounds, a skate park, a stocked pond, the library's storytimes and a trail to Eaton

Where to take children in Severance: the Town's parks and what each has, fishing at Blue Spruce Park, the Severance Library's storytimes and after-school programs, the Great Western Trail, the pools in Windsor and the Town's year from the trick-or-treat parade to the fishing derby.

· Checked by [FIRST NAME], October 7, 2026

The Town of Severance’s Parks & Recreation page lists parks rather than a recreation center or classes: parks spread through the subdivisions and open to the public. The Town also puts on family events through the year, and the library runs the weekly programs. The pools below are in Windsor. Here is what there is, with the rules, ages and prices each operator publishes.

Parks and playgrounds

The Town’s Parks & Trails map, dated April 2026, counts 18 parks over 105.1 acres. The Town’s own pages describe what is in five of them.

  • Lakeview Park, at 513½ Broadview Drive off South 1st Street, has the longest list of the five: a playground, a skateboard park, basketball courts, covered picnic shelters, barbecue pits and restrooms, with four parking areas (Town page). It is also one of the library district’s two StoryWalk sites, where the pages of a children’s book are set out along a path; the story changes every other month (library).
  • Karen Suman Park in the Timber Ridge subdivision has a Play-On! playground built, in the Town’s words, for sliding, swinging, spinning, climbing, brachiating and balancing, plus picnic shelters and tables. Its facility page puts it at 1108 Pinon Pine Drive and the Parks & Recreation page at 400 S Timber Ridge Parkway (Town page).
  • Summit View Park, in the middle of the Summit View subdivision off Audubon Boulevard, has a playground and picnic shelters (Town page).
  • Brownell Park at the Old Town Hall on 1st Street is small and shady, with picnic tables and no playground listed (Town page).
  • Overlook Park on Audubon Boulevard, 6.9 acres on the map, is where the Town holds its teen field day.

The largest, the 37.3-acre Community Park on Waterfowl Way, was under construction in early October, with opening expected in late fall, weather permitting. None of the Town park pages read for this guide lists a splash pad.

For a birthday party, the Town asks for a pavilion or park reservation at least 14 business days ahead and takes up to 10 business days to review it; a reservation counts only once the Town confirms it (Special Events).

Fishing

Blue Spruce Park in the Timber Ridge subdivision, off 4th Avenue, has a pond with a fountain, picnic tables and shade trees. The pond is stocked with fish by the state wildlife agency, and fishing is allowed with the proper license; there is no swimming or playing in the pond and no ice fishing (Town page). Children don’t need the license: Colorado Parks and Wildlife says anyone under 16 can take a full bag and possession limit without one (CPW). Hunter’s Crossing Pond and Trails, seven acres on the map, is another park with a pond.

The Town’s Kids Fishing Derby at Blue Spruce Park ran on May 16 this year, in three slots: ages 1 to 5 from 7 to 8 am, 6 to 9 from 8:30 to 9:30 and 10 to 15 from 10 to 11, with breakfast from Calvary Severance. It was open to Severance residents only, registration was limited, and children brought their own rods and bait (Town page).

The library

The Severance Library at 5 Timber Ridge Parkway is open Monday to Thursday 10 to 6 and Friday and Saturday 10 to 5, and is closed Sunday (hours). A parent or guardian must sign for a card for a child under 14 (cards). Staff will not leave a child under 10 waiting outside for a ride (policy).

For the youngest, the October calendar has programs that need no registration, in the Cottonwood room:

  • Babies and Books, a lapsit storytime for birth to 2, Wednesdays at 10 (event page).
  • Read, Rhyme, and Romp, an active storytime for ages 0 to 5, Mondays at 10 (event page).
  • Stay and Play, open-ended play for ages 0 to 2, after the Monday and Wednesday storytimes at 10:30 (event page).
  • Thursdays at the Library, an open house on select Thursdays from 10 to 11:30; October 8 is a Baby Rave for ages 0 to 2 (event page).

For school-age children, Lego Explorers is open Lego building on Tuesday afternoons for elementary children and tweens up to 12, with registration (event page); October’s sessions, like Kids in the Kitchen and the Teen Cookbook Club, were already full. Chess Club takes ages 6 to 18 on Wednesday afternoons with no registration (event page). At PAWS for Reading, children read to a trained therapy dog and get a small prize afterward; the page says Severance sessions are on Tuesday mornings, though the October calendar also lists one on Wednesday, October 14, at 3:30. Slots open 14 days ahead (event page).

Beyond the programs, the district runs 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, ten levels of 100 books with a prize at each (library), and the Adventure Pass, which a cardholder can use to reserve free or discounted admission to places such as the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery, the Butterfly Pavilion and the Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greeley (Adventure Pass). The Summer Adventure Program ran from June 1 to July 31 this year and returns in summer 2027 (library).

The Great Western Trail

The Great Western Trail follows the old sugar-beet railroad for 10.5 miles: about three miles north from Windsor’s trail system to the center of Severance, then 7.5 miles east through farmland to Eaton. It has a gentle grade, is wide and has a soft crusher-fines surface. A spur reaches Severance Middle School (history). The Trail Authority asks users to stay on the trail and respect neighboring land.

Pools, in Windsor

  • The Windsor Community Recreation Center at 250 N 11th Street in Windsor has an indoor pool with three lap lanes, a lazy river, a water slide and a zero-depth pool with a play feature. Children 9 and under must be with someone 16 or older at all times. The activity pool closes Monday to Thursday from 5 to 7 pm and Saturday from 8 to 10 am for swim lessons (Windsor). Daily admission is $5 under 5 and $6 for anyone under 21; a family-of-four annual membership is $693 (rates).
  • Chimney Park Pool in Windsor, the outdoor pool, is closed for the season. Its posted day rates are $4 under 5, $5 for youth and $18 for a family of up to four; it has a separate kiddie pool, and a water slide is promised for 2027 (Windsor).
  • The Windsor Lake Swim Beach at Boardwalk Park is free in daylight hours, with no lifeguard; children under 9 need a guardian 16 or older, and the lake is untreated agricultural water (Windsor).

The calendar

  • October: the library’s Teen Movie Night on the 24th is for ages 12 to 18 only. The Town’s Trick or Treat Parade on the 30th runs from 3 to 5 pm at Town Hall and the library, with trunk-or-treating and a haunted Town Hall. Bring a nonperishable food item as the “entrance fee,” and trick-or-treaters must come with an adult (Town). Severance High’s home football games are $5 for K–12 students and free for pre-K and under (school).
  • December 12: Town Christmas at Community Park, 2 to 5 pm, with Santa and Ms. Claus, horse-drawn carriage rides, the Grinch, reindeer, crafts, caroling and fireworks to close (Town).
  • Winter: snowball fights have been legal since December 2018, when a nine-year-old persuaded the Town board to repeal an old ban on throwing missiles (BBC). Around Valentine’s Day, the Hearts around Severance scavenger hunt sends families to parks and businesses to find lettered hearts, with a small prize at Town Hall for a finished sheet (Town).
  • Spring and summer, with the dates the Town’s pages give for this year’s events (check for next year’s): Teen Field Day at Overlook Park on May 9, for ages 13 to 18 with a guardian’s waiver (Town); the fishing derby on May 16; Touch a Truck at the Public Works Shop, 145 3rd Avenue, on May 22, with snowplows, a backhoe, police cars and a fire truck, and a free snow cone for the first 50 (Town); Movies in the Park on June 26 at Lakeview Park and July 24 at Karen Suman Park (Town); and the Safety Fair at Town Hall on July 11, with first responders, demonstrations and a free weather radio for the first 100 (Town). Severance Days, the Town’s yearly festival, was canceled for 2026 while Community Park is rebuilt.
